The training of the foreign students has been provided since 1973.

 

Zaporozhye State Medical University is a self-governing, modern, multiprofile higher educational institution of the IV-th (the top) level of accreditation. Its history goes back to the Higher Women Courses organized in Odessa in 1903. In 1959 it was transferred from Odessa to Zaporozhye and renamed into Zaporozhye Pharmaceutical Institute. Then in 1969 the name changed to Zaporozhye Medical Institute. In 1994 it got the status of Zaporozhye State Medical University. The University is a center of training MD, Masters of Pharmacy and Bachelors for Ukraine and foreign countries The main objective of the University is training of highly-qualified specialists for practical medicine and pharmacy, carrying out scientific researches, training of scientific staff as well as international cooperation in the field of education and science.

Zaporozhye State Medical University has a well-developed infrastructure, highly qualified staff, good material support, that provide high level of teaching process, quality of specialists' training, scientific and medical-diagnostic work.

And since that day ZSMU has been successfully developing the international cooperation in the sphere of training of foreign citizens. At present about 11000 students are being trained at the University, 2000 foreign citizens from 40 countries are among them. The system of training includes premedical, undergraduate and postgraduate periods of study. The premedical education (1 year) is provided at the International faculty No1, which is the oldest one in the countries of CIS.

Zaporozhye State Medical University has a well-developed infrastructure, highly qualified staff, good material support that provide high level of teaching process, quality of specialists’ training, scientific and medical-diagnostic work.

More than 100 Professors and Doctors of sciences, 439 Associate Professors and PhDs, the Academicians of Native Academies, Honorary workers of higher institutions of Ukraine, State prize winners are engaged in pedagogical and scientific work at 61 departments of the University.

The departments and laboratories are supplied with the modern equipment. The University has its own training-scientific centre "University Clinic" where practical classes are conducted and medical aid is delivered.

Zaporozhye State Medical University implements activities on integration into the European educational space. It has MoUs with 40 Universities. Students and young researchers take part in academic exchanges with partner Universities in Poland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Estonia and Belarus. ZSMU is a member of such international associations as An International Association for Medical Education (AMEE), Eurasian University Association (EAU), Association of Medical School in Europe (AMSE), European Association for International Education (ЕАІЕ), Organization for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS) and Ukrainian Medical Students 'Association (UMSA). It also takes part in the projects of Tempus and Erasmus+ programs.

Kolesnyk Yuriy Mykhailovych M.D., Ph.D., Doctor of Science (Medicine), Professor, Rector of Zaporozhye State Medical University, Honorary Scientist and Engineering Worker of Ukraine, a well known scientist in pathological physiology, a founder of the pathological physiology school recognized in Ukraine and abroad.

Yuriy Mykhailovych Kolesnyk was born on the 21-st of May, 1958, in Zaporozhye. In 1981 he graduated from Zaporozhye State Medical University with honors. In 1984 he completed full-time postgraduate study at the Department of Pathological Physiology. In 1985 Yu. M. Kolesnyk defended a PhD thesis and in 1993 he defended thesis for a Doctor's degree.

In 1994 Yu. M. Kolesnyk was appointed the academic title of Associate Professor and in 1996 he was appointed the academic title of Professor. In December 1994 he was selected from among other candidates to the post of Pro-rector for pedagogical work of Zaporozhye State Medical University. Since 1995 he has been the Head of the Pathological Physiology Department. In June 2003 Yuriy Mikhailovich Kolesnyk was elected the Rector of Zaporozhye State Medical University by the labour collective of the University. In 2008 he was reelected.

Yu. M. Kolesnyk is the author of more than 350 scientific works, 3 monographs, 24 patents of Ukraine and Russia. He has trained 8 PhDs and 3 Doctors of Sciences. There are 3 candidate theses and 3 Doctor theses under his guidance now.

Yu. M. Kolesnyk is a chief editor of professional editions of Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine: "Zaporozhye Medical Journal" and "Actual Problems of Pharmaceutical and Medical Science and Practice", a member of the board administration panel of All-Ukrainian Pathophysiologists Society and International Society of Neuroendocrinologists, the head of the Specialized Science Board Д 17.600.02 for defending Candidate and Doctor theses in the specialties 14.01.02 "Internal diseases", 14.01.11 "Cardiology" and 14.01.10 "Pediatry".

During Professor Yu. M. Kolesnyk's leadership new specialties "Laboratory diagnostics", "Technology of perfume-cosmetic preparations" and "Dentistry" were opened at the University. In 2008 a training-scientific centre "University Clinic was opened. Since 2009 Medical College under the University has been functioning. Since 2009 the Specialized Science Board for defending Candidate and Doctor theses in the specialty 15.00.02 "Pharmaceutical chemistry and Pharmacognosy" is opened. English medium if instruction is implemented. During 6 years the University is a leader among the higher educational institutions in material and technical supply and advanced learning technologies. ZSMU takes the first place among the higher educational institutions of Zaporozhye region by the rating of the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine.

1998 - the honorary title Soros Professor;

1998 – a prize of the Ukrainian Academy of Medical Sciences in the field of fundamental medicine;

    the regional prize "Man of Year – 1999" in the nomination "The Best Research Scientific design",

Diploma of the Parliament of Ukraine "For great services to Ukraine" of 23.12.2004;

Diploma of the Parliament of Ukraine " For considerable personal contribution to the realization of the state youth policy in the region, education of youth and long-term conscientious work",

Order of Venerable Agapit Pechersky, of Apostle St. Andrew, Venerable Nestor Annalist.

The system of training includes premedical, undergraduate and postgraduate periods of study. The premedical education (1 year) is provided at the International faculty No1, which is the oldest one in the countries of CIS.

The undergraduate education is carried out at the International Faculty No2 in the specialties:

•  General Medicine. MD. Period of study is 6 years.

•  Pediatrics. MD. Period of study is 6 years.

•  Dentistry. MD. Period of study is 5 years.

•  Pharmacy. Master of Pharmacy. Period of study is 5 years.

•  Technology of perfume - cosmetic preparations. Master of Pharmacy. Period of training is 5 years.

The postgraduate education includes training in the internship, training for Master's degree, clinical studies, postgraduate courses in 29 medical specialties and refresher courses for doctors and pharmacists.

•  The training of foreign citizens is provided by contract basis.

•  The medium of instruction is Russian, Ukrainian and English.
